With their prickly exteriors and iconic shapes, cacti are fixtures of Western landscapes and add interest to a home’s interior decor. The March issue of Vail HOME magazine features an article by Colorado Alpines & Wildflower Farm owner Marty Jones titled “Prickly Perfect” and covers home decor trends involving the beloved cactus.
The article offers details for five on-trend ways to decorate with cacti, including:
-Layering in Clear Glass Planters
-Arranging in Metallic and Geometric Pots
-Crafting Creative DIY Containers
-Displaying a Cactus Showstopper, and
-Creating a Cactus Garden Centerpiece.
CACTUS CARE TIPS:
Once you’ve integrated a live cactus plant design into your home’s decor, you’ll still need to care for it. Good news: Since cactus plants generally survive in low-water conditions, they are almost worry-free as houseplants. In fact, overwatering tends to be the source of their demise. Follow these tips to keep your creation happy within your home for seasons to come:
–Watering: Depending on the size of the plant and on light and temperature conditions, a cactus may only need to be watered once a month in the winter season and 2-3 times a month during warmer months. Remember to drain off excess water after watering.
–Location: Place cactus plants in bright, indirect sunlight to avoid sunburn.
–Soil and Containers: Cactus varieties need to be planted in well-drained soil and in containers that allow for drainage. Choose a cactus-specific soil mix made of light, rocky soil. Plant cacti in planters that have drainage holes in the bottom, or put one plastic pot with drainage holes within a more stylish container.
–Managing Growth: As cactus plants grow taller, some larger varieties will need to be staked since their height and size may not be able to support their weight if planted indoors in a pot.
